Veg.itecture (aka Vegetated Architecture) is a spin-off site from Landscape+Urbanism author & Portland-based landscape architect Jason A. King, ASLA LEED. The site focuses on the representation and implementation of green roofs, living walls, and vertical farming solutions from around the world.
This wall is failing, as it is the same system used in the Paradise Park wall at Islington, London, which attracted a lot of negative press when it too failed.
They were pioneering attempts at vertical greening but the design did not get the underlying technology quite right. This wall is going to be replaced during 2011 with a wall by my company, BioTecture (we did not do the originals. We were also chosen to replace the Paradise Park wall but that contract was cancelled due to political disagreement (it is a publicly-owned building).
As often happens, aspiration hits the hard wall of reality and only a few technologies will work in the longer term.
Please post pictures of the New Street Square wall when BioTecture has stripped and re-built it!
